Bacchante (1) 1998 Bronze Height: 26 inches Base: 28 x 22 inches Edition of 9. This figure is from the Bacchanal circle (5th picture), one of two individual female bacchants within the dance. I see her as a little bird flying on her own, content in herself, then joining up with others in a later movement. There are four movements in the bacchanal. 1. Group of Three, (see 3rd picture) 2. Lovers; a man and woman holding hands. 3. Bacchant 1 4. Bacchant 2 Bacchant 2 and Lovers can be identified in the 5th picture. Bacchant 2 has her arms raised high, she is in the dance but with a certain cool detachment. The lovers hold hands for now, but reach out to join with the others. The circle breaks and joins depending on the rhythm of the dance. There is continual passing from one movement to another.

Group of Three 1997 Bronze Height: 25 inches Base: 90 x 40 inches Edition of 9. In this movement a female bacchant in the centre is being pulled along by a too enthusiastic man while she in turn is pulling a reluctant falling man. See a different view in the 5th picture and how it fits into the context of the bacchanal circle. This was the first sculpture completed in the bacchanal circle, and my first serious attempt to master the classical male nude. The project had started with a maquette back in 1981. It was inspired by Matisse¹s dancing circles. I remember asking Nathan Cabot Hale, who wrote the introduction to the reprint of Lanteri's Modelling and Sculpture, if I should make the sculpture impressionistic or classical. He said do it classically. That was outside my range them. Art opinion, at the time, was that an impressionistic (Matisse) style would be more vital. I had seen classical bacchanal figures by Malvina Hoffman and I thought they were vital. There are so many sculptors like her who have lapsed into obscurity. It took me sixteen years to prepare myself to attempt a bacchanal using classical technique. We sculptors have lost so much since the demise of the academic teaching system.
