The Kiss 2001 Bronze Height: 50 inches Base: 20 x 20 inches Edition of nine (three quarters life scale). The Kiss was a challenge in virtuoso technique and stretched me to the limit of my capability. I was convinced that one could use it to achieve a sensitive communication of body language. The composition took a long time to realise; one can say so many other things with just a slight change, the twist of the neck or the carriage of the torso. Proportions are also difficult to balance. Classicism contains the notion of ideal proportions, our concept of beauty comes from the Ancient Greeks; this may be challenged today as not being real, but the Greeks wanted to show what the gods and goddesses looked like. This Platonic idea inspired the Renaissance. In the resurrected body, beauty of spirit and beauty of body combined, and its message of eternal love still draws forth the mind. The Kiss will be on exhibit at the Bruton Street Gallery, London, July and August 2001. www.brutonstreetgallery.com
