Bacchante (1) 1998 Bronze Height: 26 inches Base: 28 x 22 inches Edition of 9. This figure is from the Bacchanal circle (5th picture), one of two individual female bacchants within the dance. I see her as a little bird flying on her own, content in herself, then joining up with others in a later movement. There are four movements in the bacchanal. 1. Group of Three, (see 3rd picture) 2. Lovers; a man and woman holding hands. 3. Bacchant 1 4. Bacchant 2 Bacchant 2 and Lovers can be identified in the 5th picture. Bacchant 2 has her arms raised high, she is in the dance but with a certain cool detachment. The lovers hold hands for now, but reach out to join with the others. The circle breaks and joins depending on the rhythm of the dance. There is continual passing from one movement to another.
