The Kiss 2001 Bronze Height: 50 inches Base: 20 x 20 inches Edition of nine (three quarters life scale). The Kiss was a challenge in virtuoso technique and stretched me to the limit of my capability. I was convinced that one could use it to achieve a sensitive communication of body language. The composition took a long time to realise; one can say so many other things with just a slight change, the twist of the neck or the carriage of the torso. Proportions are also difficult to balance. Classicism contains the notion of ideal proportions, our concept of beauty comes from the Ancient Greeks; this may be challenged today as not being real, but the Greeks wanted to show what the gods and goddesses looked like. This Platonic idea inspired the Renaissance. In the resurrected body, beauty of spirit and beauty of body combined, and its message of eternal love still draws forth the mind. The Kiss will be on exhibit at the Bruton Street Gallery, London, November and December 2001. See exhibition critique by Simon Corbin |

Bacchanal Circle 1999 Bronze Height: 32 inches, diameter 9 feet (80 cms x 300 cms diameter) The figures are in half life size scale Edition of 9 This sculpture consists of seven figures and is in the tradition of the classical bacchanal with its Renaissance meaning of agape. One Circle is already sited at an office park development in Dublin and placed on a water feature. The sculpture is intended as a fountain centre piece, the figures mounted on a raised bronze bowl, with water flowing over the rim into a pool below. I am still in the process of designing this, and it is how I ideally conceive its placing. However alternative placing is possible. It is important that it be viewed at eye level with the figures 33 inches above the ground. This sculpture will be on exhibition at the Bruton Street Gallery, London in November and December 2001. |

Bacchante (1) 1998 Bronze Height: 26 inches Base: 28 x 22 inches Edition of 9. This figure is from the Bacchanal circle (5th picture), one of two individual female bacchants within the dance. I see her as a little bird flying on her own, content in herself, then joining up with others in a later movement. There are four movements in the bacchanal. 1. Group of Three, (see 3rd picture) 2. Lovers; a man and woman holding hands. 3. Bacchant 1 4. Bacchant 2 Bacchant 2 and Lovers can be identified in the 5th picture. Bacchant 2 has her arms raised high, she is in the dance but with a certain cool detachment. The lovers hold hands for now, but reach out to join with the others. The circle breaks and joins depending on the rhythm of the dance. There is continual passing from one movement to another. | |
| Group of Three 1997 Bronze Height: 25 inches Base: 90 x 40 inches Edition of 9. In this movement a female bacchant in the centre is being pulled along by a too enthusiastic man while she in turn is pulling a reluctant falling man. See a different view in the 5th picture and how it fits into the context of the bacchanal circle. This was the first sculpture completed in the bacchanal circle, and my first serious attempt to master the classical male nude. The project had started with a maquette back in 1981. It was inspired by Matisse¹s dancing circles. I remember asking Nathan Cabot Hale, who wrote the introduction to the reprint of Lanteri's Modelling and Sculpture, if I should make the sculpture impressionistic or classical. He said do it classically. That was outside my range them. Art opinion, at the time, was that an impressionistic (Matisse) style would be more vital. I had seen classical bacchanal figures by Malvina Hoffman and I thought they were vital. There are so many sculptors like her who have lapsed into obscurity. It took me sixteen years to prepare myself to attempt a bacchanal using classical technique. We sculptors have lost so much since the demise of the academic teaching system. | ![]() |

| Flute Player (Lynda with Twin Flutes) 1993 Bronze Height: 28 inches, with limestone stand 5 feet Edition of 9 (2 available) I made this sculpture soon after I had decided to commit myself fully to academic art. It was modelled extensively from life. I usually work four sessions a week, of three hours each, and this sculpture took about three months. I find that the time taken concentrates the power of the image. It gives back what was put into it. The theme is taken from Ancient Greece, a flute girl perhaps entertaining at a symposium. I was also inspired by a fresco in the opera house La Scalla, Milan. Everything in the Nineteenth century period expressed the same idea: opera, ballet, painting, sculpture, architecture. The music spoke to the ear and the art to the eye; it covered the walls and ceiling of the auditorium and public rooms. This sculpture in on exhibition at the Bruton Street Gallery, July and August. 2001. | ![]() |
